Biography

Peter obtained his B.Sc (Hons) in Microbiology from University of Malaya in 1992 and a Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil) in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology from Exeter College, University of Oxford in 1998. He was a Research Scientist, and Head of Microarray Group with A-Star Bioprocessing Technology Institute in Singapore (2001 to 2010) prior to joining the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus. His areas of expertise are industrial and environmental microbiology, molecular and cellular biology, system biology and genomics with specialization in high throughput gene expression profiling using DNA microarray and Next-Gen sequencing technologies. He has a H-index of 16 and have published journal papers and book chapters, in the subject area of genomics and gene expression analysis. His current research interest is in biocontrol of animal and plant pathogens, as well as applications of Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP) to potential road construction, in collaboration with School of Engineering.

  • Development of miRNA as biomarkers for early detection of cancer and the use thereafter as biotherapeutics;
  • Identifying microorganisms from unexplored environment as potential biocontrol agents against plant and animal pathogens;
One of our current research effort at Swinburne Sarawak is a collaborative effort involving SBC (Sarawak Biodiversity Centre). We have successfully isolated new Muscodor-like fungi from Borneo, Sarawak, Malaysia and evaluation of their potential use as biocontrol agents against Ganoderma boninense is ongoing. This project was a Ph.D thesis undertaken by Noreha Mahidi, who is a senior scientist with SBC.

Technical expertise and essential skills

  • Hands-on experience and sound knowledge of gene cloning and expression in mammalian cells.
  • Hands-on technical experience and knowledge of library constructions for cDNA, genomic and small RNA libraries
    1. Normalization of cDNA libraries
    2. Construction of phage libraries
    3. Construction of libraries for Roche 454 and Illumina Next Generation sequencing technologies
    4. Construction of small RNA libraries for Illumina and ABI SOLID sequencing
  • Sound knowledge of, and practical experience in data analysis, assembly and annotation of sequence data generated by next generation sequencers.
  • Application of gene and protein microarray, real time PCR, proteomics, next generation sequencing (Roche 454, Illumina, ABI Solid), to the discovery of biomarkers and gene targets
  • Plant tissue culture and Mammalian cell culture.
