Biography

Associate Professor Hugh Leong graduated from University of Malaya (UM) with Honours in Bachelor of Education, majoring in TESOL in 2009. He completed Master in International Education from University of Manchester, United Kingdom in 2010.

He is currently the Head of School (School of Design and Arts) in the Faculty of Business, Design and Arts in Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, Malaysia. He is also the research leader of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Cluster, Centre of Education Research under the School of Research, Swinburne Sarawak.

At Swinburne he teaches across multiple disciplines across TESOL, Management & Communication at undergraduate and masters level. He is also an accredited HDR supervisor, and currently supervises Masters of Research and PhD students. His research interests include testing and assessment, assessment for learning, student engagement, TESOL pedagogy, qualitative research methods, and educational research and practice in general.

He is also a certified and licensed Train the Trainer under HRDF Malaysia and IABFM. To date, he has conducted numerous professional development programs across Asia including China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia training over a thousand participants.

Hugh is also an internationally recognised debater, adjudicator and coach and is a two-time, Malaysian national intervarsity debating champion and was awarded the Best Varsity Speaker of Malaysia in 2009. He has contributed tremendously to student engagement activities both within Swinburne and in the state of Sarawak. Up till 2021, he has acted as a pro bono consultant, chief adjudicator and technical director for over 40 debate and public speaking events for numerous schools, institution and government departments across Malaysia.
