Aims and learning outcomes

This unit aims to develop basic skills and knowledge in chemistry in order to prepare students for tertiary studies in science and engineering.

Students who successfully complete this unit should be able to:

  1. Understand the concepts of stoichiometry and apply them to the analysis of chemicals
  2. Demonstrate basic laboratory skills in quantitative and qualitative analysis using various analytical techniques including instrumentation
  3. Understand the concepts of equilibrium and rate of reaction and apply them to the industrial production of chemicals
  4. Describe a range of non-renewable energy sources, their limited nature and application of renewable energy sources
  5. Describe the structures, properties and reactions of organic compounds and explain their significance to life
