The Swinburne Advanced English Grammar is an intensive 45-hour, 8-week program designed to support students improve their academic English proficiency while studying in university. The program aims at introducing advanced and complex grammar concepts such as applying different types of tenses, nouns, conditional and conjunctions to students. The unit will also be hands on by giving the opportunity to students to interact, practice, and apply what they have learnt in the classroom with their peers, and indifferent formats of writing.

Upon successful completion, you will be awarded from Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak.

Course objective

This course aims to:

    1. Introducing advanced and complex grammar concepts to students
    2. Instructing students to blend verb tenses effectively and how to punctuate sentences correctly
    3. Helping students improve their academic English

Learning outcome

Participants who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • Review all verb tenses and practice blending and mixing tenses in English
  • Develop complex sentences using conjunctions and connective devices
  • Practice using noun clauses and conditionals in advanced speaking and writing
  • Practice acquired advanced grammar points in writing

Trainer information

Hugh Leong graduated from University of Malaya (UM) with Honours in Bachelor of Education, majoring in TESOL in 2009. He completed a Masters in International Education from University of Manchester, United Kingdom in 2010.

He is currently the Course Director of the MA TESOL program, in the Faculty of Business, Design and Arts in Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, Malaysia. Hugh is an international recognised debater, adjudicator and coach and is a two-time, Malaysian national intervarsity debating champion adn was awarded the Best Varsity Speaker of Malaysia in 2009.

He is also a licensed Train the Trainer, and has conducted numerous professional development programs across Asia. His research interests include assessment for learning, student engagement and teacher education.
