Overview

Three Minute Thesis (3MTĀ®) is a research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland.

The exercise challenges PhD students to present a compelling oration on their thesis topic and its significance in just three minutes.

3MT develops academic, presentation, and research communication skills and supports the development of research students' capacity to effectively explain their research in language appropriate to a nonspecialist audience.

History

The first 3MT was held at The University of Queensland in 2008 with 160 HDR students competing. Enthusiasm for the 3MT concept grew and its widespread implementation by universities has led to the development of an international competition.

Strong support for 3MT exists in Australia and New Zealand with 44 institutions coming together to participate in the 2013 TransTasman 3MT Competition.

Postgraduate Research Society Swinburne Sarawak will be organizing the second 3MT competition this year and welcome students from various disciplines to take up the challenge. The highlights of this competition include sponsored trip for top two victors to compete at Swinburne University Hawthorne Campus in Melbourne, Australia for the finals in August 2015 and a research grant worth RM 1,500 for the People’s Choice Award winner.
