Health & Safety Commitment Statement

Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus transforms lives through quality education and society through world class research. An essential element of our vibrant organisation is the provision of a safe and supportive working environment for our staff and students. To this end, Swinburne is fully committed to the principles of Occupational Health and Safety and to providing healthy and safe work and learning environments for all persons involved in our activities.

Swinburne University is committed to:

  • The ongoing development and improvement of our occupational health and safety system with a focus on the reduction of illness and injury for all employees, students and other persons.
  • Observing, implementing and fulfilling the requirements under the Occupational Safety & Health Act 1994, and other health and safety requirements to which the university subscribes.
  • Ongoing dialogue around health and safety with all persons involved in Swinburne activities to ensure the safety of all.
  • Ensuring our staff, students and contractors receive the appropriate health and safety training to enable them to conduct their work/study safely and to prepare our students for their chosen profession.
  • Having our leaders lead by example through their actions to motivate, educate and support all staff and students in good occupational health and safety behaviour.
  • The ongoing regular monitoring and review of our health and safety performance to monitor the effectiveness of OHS actions and ensure our health and safety objectives and targets are being met.
  • Ensuring all levels of management, staff and students carry out their health and safety responsibilities as a natural part of work practice

Smoke Free Campus

The University is smoke-free, as part of the commitment to ensuring a safe and healthy environment for staff, students and visitors.

Smoking is not permitted on University premises including outdoor areas in and around the campus. This includes the electronic cigarettes – or vaping.

The University will support staff and students in promoting and upholding the smoke-free environment.

Staff and students who smoke in contravention of this policy may be disciplined.

Offenders may also be subject to fines of up to RM 10,000 and/or 2 years imprisonment by the enforcers from the State Health Department.

Definitions: Smoking refers to the use of traditional tobacco products. Vaping refers to the use of electronic nicotine delivery systems or electronic smoking devices. These are commonly called e-cigarettes, e-pipes, e-hookahs and e-cigars.

Security on Campus

Swinburne provides a safe work and learning environment for all our students, staff and visitors. Our campuses offer security services, including CCTV and security officers on campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Safety Tips on Campus

  • Familiarise yourself with your campus security office and save the security emergency number (082 – 260991) into your phone.
  • Always be alert and aware of your surroundings. If you are using headphones, only use one earplug so you can hear sounds around you.
  • Keep your valuables with you at all times.
  • Walk in well-lit areas in pairs or groups if possible.
  • Avoid parking your car in an isolated area. Close and lock all doors and windows and don’t leave valuables in sight in your car.
