Aims and objectives

The aim of this unit is to provide students with a fundamental appreciation of the physical principles of applied fluid mechanics in several multiphase separation systems and their equipment and process designs.

Unit Learning Outcomes (ULO)

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  1. perform basic analysis of fluid and particle properties and behaviour in incompressible and compressible flow (K1,K2,K3,S1,S2)
  2. perform basic analysis of some processes for fluid and particle separation (i.e. filtration and sedimentation) (K1,K2,K3,S1,S2)
  3. apply the basics of filtration, sedimentation and fluidization to industrial separation processes.(K1,K3,S1)

  • Gas/liquid flow; flow patterns in horizontal pipes; vertical flow
  • Single and multiple particles systems
  • Flow through porous media
  • Filtration; Introduction to filtration process; incompressible and compressible cake; filtration equipment
  • Sedimentation; Theory, Batch and Continuous Settler design
  • Flocculation; compression; settling of drops and bubbles
  • Fluidization; liquid-solid, gas-solid systems
  • Centrifuge and cyclone theory
