ICT workshop wows secondary school students

KUCHING – About 180 secondary school students had a glimpse into the exciting developments and possible career choices in ICT, thanks to a workshop organised by Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, recently.

The Forms 4 and 5 students from seven schools in the city had the chance to experience developing mobile application, web and games development at the three-day workshop conducted by computing academic staff from the university.

The students enjoyed themselves and at the end of the final day, described the short course as simply “awesome!”

The workshop was intended to create a deeper understanding of ICT among the students, said Professor Anthony Cahalan, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Swinburne Sarawak.

“ICT plays a large role in our everyday lives and activities. It is important to make young people aware of the potential career choice in the field,” Cahalan said at the closing of the workshop where he presented certificates of completion to the participants.

“Sarawak will need more ICT graduates in the future. This was our chance to introduce these students to ICT especially in keeping them up-to-date with developments in this field.”

Swinburne Sarawak offers a range of courses in computing ranging from foundation, degree to postgraduate levels.

“Swinburne’s computing courses are in high demand. Our students are involved in real projects because of the university’s strong ties with industry. Our academics are also lifelong enthusiasts for their subject,” Cahalan said.
