School of Engineering, Computing and Science retains sports carnival championship title

KUCHING – After a week of stiff competition the School of Engineering, Computing and Science retained the championship title of the recently concluded Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus Sports Carnival.

The School of Language and Foundation came in second while Team A of the School of Business and Design was third.

A total of five teams, including a staff team as well as a second team from the School of Business and Design, competed for the championship trophy in basketball, futsal, squash, table tennis, volleyball, badminton, and telematch.

The School of Engineering, Computing and Science, who were the champion in last year’s event, were again unstoppable this year and collected maximum points in all events except women’s basketball where they were placed third.

In squash, however, the School of Language and Foundation gave the School of Engineering, Computing and Science a close fight but the former managed only to take second place in the event eventually.

The telematch was the highlight on the carnival’s final day where students and staff competed in tug-of-war, hop backwards gunny sack race, three legged race, giant slipper, polo ball race, candle light relay, King Kong race, piggy back balloon, and power man bike run (mountain biking and running).

Giving away the prizes was Professor Helmut Lueckenhausen, the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Swinburne Sarawak.

Sponsors of the event were Celcom, PPES Works, Nestle, Q Edge Company, Santubong Resort, Borneo Asset, PGA Batu Kawa, KBC Event Management, Red Bull Sdn Bhd, Killpest Sdn Bhd, Hasnarama Automobile, Moh Tak Bicycle, Joyo ProBike, Fah Fatt, Manna Zone and Chillipeppers.

The annual event was organised by Swinburne Sarawak’s Student Operations Unit assisted by the various schools and units of the University.
