Absenteeism – A Case Study in The Sarawak Civil Service
Public sector across the world is giving more attention to absenteeism. In the Sarawak civil service absenteeism is not a new phenomenon and as reported in the annual report of the Sarawak Public Service Commission for the year 2013 until 2017 absenteeism has been identified as the highest disciplinary cases committed by public officers in the civil service. Understanding of this phenomenon and the management requires an in-depth knowledge of the issues and factors by government agencies, unions and policy experts, which can lead to a multifaceted answer.

The research study is designed to explore and examine the influence demographic variables on absenteeism, and to identify the factor influencing absenteeism cause among Sarawak civil service public officers. This is a quantitative research using absenteeism data and records gathered from the Sarawak Public Service Commission’s office from the year 2013 until 2017. The data of 97 Sarawak civil service public officers were entered in the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 24 and the relationship is analysed using Pearson’s Chi-Squared test. The result demonstrated that public officer’s marital status and length of service have a positive relationship with absenteeism. However, results failed to support hypothesised relationship between gender and public officer work type and absenteeism. Finally, findings also revealed that the factor contributing to non-participative of work is family issue followed by workplace issue, financial stress and lastly issue concerning health problem.
