Our Research

In its Research Vision, Swinburne University of Technology (Swinburne) aims to be recognized not only for high quality research but also for research that:

  1. is relevant to the community
  2. engages the community
  3. is translational, i.e. connects basic research to real world solutions to problems in the community
  4. is influential to government planning and policies

Sarawak is a nascent manufacturing State in Malaysia and a forthcoming energy-intensive industries powerhouse, particularly with the setting up of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE). The core of SCORE is its huge energy resources from hydroelectric and coal power generators which will allow Sarawak to price its energy competitively and encourage investments in power generation and energy-intensive industries that will act as triggers for the development of a vibrant industrial development in the corridor.

There is also a huge untapped potential in the State’s rich biodiversity. Using SCORE and biodiversity as two of the key drivers, the Government aspires to improve the economic standing of the State and thus the quality of life of its people. In addition, Sarawak has enjoyed a higher than national average growth in its agriculture due to continuing Government efforts to modernise the industry. This advancement of the agriculture industry is crucial as it brings development to the rural interior of the State.

Therefore, Swinburne Sarawak will conduct research in areas that are relevant and address the needs of the government, local communities and industries with the common goal of advancing the State and its people. In the past, there have been numerous research and development collaborations with local industries such as 1st Silicon, Komag Sarawak, Biotech Alliance International, Malaysian Pepper Board, Hock Seng Lee etc. These efforts should now be firmly supported and intensified.

Swinburne Sarawak is fortunate to have a natural “top 500” partner in Swinburne University that is keen to join with us to collaborate on projects and is putting matching funding towards our mutual goals. In this way Swinburne Sarawak gets all the reputational advantages of sharing a name with its “parent” university, but can concentrate on areas of development most important to its Sarawak stakeholders.
