Advanced Standing (Academic Credit)

What is Advanced Standing?

Advanced Standing provides academic credit towards a Swinburne course. It is granted based on:

  • Previous post-secondary studies
    Successfully completed studies from other educational institutions. Advanced Standing granted on this basis is also referred to as an ‘Exemption’.
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
    RPL is recognition of skills and knowledge gained through work experience, life experience and/or formal training.

How to apply

You normally apply for Advanced Standing when you submit your application to study at Swinburne. Advanced Standing is assessed based on the supporting documentation provided with your application. All assessed and approved Advanced Standing will be listed on your offer letter.

Supporting documentation to be provided for Advanced Standing:

  • Letter of Completion/s, Testamur/s or Award Certificate/s (where applicable).
  • Official Academic Transcript/s, showing units completed inclusive of any grades or marks.
  • Unit outlines of previous study for any specific units for which academic credit is sought (higher education course registrations only).

Important: Original or certified copies will only be accepted as supporting documentation for applications.

How to apply after receiving your Swinburne offer

You can still apply for Advanced Standing once you have received your offer of study, but all applications must be completed , NO later than the end of the first week of your course commencement date


Additional information for all students

Current students

If you’re currently studying at Swinburne and want to transfer from one related course to another, Swinburne will automatically credit units from your old course to your new one, where applicable.

International students

Please note additions or variations to granted Advanced Standing (exemptions) may impact your student visa.

To change or apply for Advanced Standing after you arrive, you must submit your application before the end of the first week of Semester.
